Everyone is walking around with portable power packs, also known as Power Banks these days. It has suddenly become a huge social norm and to some, an absolute daily essential accessory as it helps to keep your device alive when you’re low on juice.
Power Banks can come in many shapes and sizes and from many brands but here comes the problem; with cheap China brands suddenly massing into the market, there is no way to know if the power banks are properly built or not. These can be fatally dangerous as these literally high capacity batteries may malfunction to result in explosions or poisonous leakages.
Thus as a solution, the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism has taken the initiative to implement a regulation that states that all power banks sold in Malaysia must go through SIRIM certification. Once approved and certified, brands would need to apply for an approval letter from the ministry before their products may enter the market.
A special committee has already been set up and the regulation will be implemented as early as 2018. SIRIM approved Power Banks will be easily identified with an official SIRIM printed logo.
