Logitech G633 Artemis Spectrum RGB 7.1 Surround Gaming Headset review - A fine headgear for gamers

Is sound important to gamers? Well believe it or not, it is to some extent and sometimes it can be one of the factors when it comes to winning competitively especially in the era of eSports nowadays, or to suck us into the story and set the mood.

Logitech has been manufacturing gaming equipment for gamers for a long time to help them ensure victory in the virtual battlefield and have introduced the G633 Artemis Spectrum RGB 7.1 Surround Gaming Headset last year. This futuristic gaming headset costs RM559 (including GST) and comes with a 3.5mm analog cable with audio controls and a USB data cable for the microphone setting. But does it deliver? Read below to find out.

Design, Tech Specs and Features - Sturdy and customizable

As mentioned earlier, the G633 design is futuristic looking but also a bit bulky. Most of the materials are made out of plastic and it's quite durable in a sense that if you try to bend it, it can withstand from breaking. But my favourite part of the design is most probably the cushion for the ear, it really gave me the comfort especially in long hours playing games, and the space gap for my ears are perfect.

Not to mention, it has a nice vacuum too when putting the headset on minimizing the ambient sound from outside. Not only that, after taking it off, your ears won't feel like it needs to “breathe some air”, which is nice.

Now on my least favourite part of the design, which is the cushion at the top of the headset. Although the cushion is nice for your top head, tilting your head backwards will make it fall off quite easily. Maybe my hair is too silky or something, but since that's the case, this also means that I might as well put down the headset around my neck every time if I want to move my head around.

Also, the headset is not quite portable and it takes up a lot of space when traveling. I wish the headset can fold itself like my Audio Technica headphones and put it in the pouch (picture below), it's really convenient for pro-gamers who travel often for national tournaments, but given with its design, it can't really be helped and most gaming headsets are like that. On the bright side though, the device's earpads are flexible and it feels nice to lay on my shoulders.

In the features corner, gamers are given the option of download and installing Logitech Gaming Software programme online. The programme offers customization sound for your headset, like the G1, G2, and G3 buttons that are located on the left side of the headset. The G1 button is for cycle effect, G2 is to switch the surround sound and lastly G3 is for EQ Profile like setting the different lighting display tone.

While these sound control panel is pretty nice and all, I still wonder if gamers actually really use it because I didn't find myself adjusting the sounds as I think the default setting are good enough. On the other hand, gamers don't have to the time to press either of the G keys on the headset which kinda make it redundant, same goes to the microphone mute button below G1 because it's much easier to mute it with the actual built-in microphone by flipping it back.

Oh, speaking of the microphone, the sound is pretty clear and you can hear yourself too, although it's a bit annoying to hear the tapping of the keyboards and rapid mouse clicking when playing a fast paced game like StarCraft 2.

Performance - Awareness level +10

Normally, casual people would perceive all gaming headset provide the same sound like normal headphones do. But that's not the case, wearing gaming headset are specialized in giving distinctive sounds like footsteps, direction of the gun shot, ambient sounds and many others to immerse the gamer into the virtual world.

As a huge horror fan myself, the first game that I tried testing with the G633 was Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It was actually my first time playing the game, so I didn't really know what to expect and it was a good opportunity. Even on the first level, the atmosphere was already creepy hearing the water dripping on my left, even the character's breathing is clear. As I progressed through the story, I got more paranoid and a bit scared because a game like Amenesia, where weapons don't exist forces you to use your wits to outrun and hide from monsters.

Other games like Role Playing Games (RPG) and RTS (Real Time Strategy) were just alright for me, I think the sound effects in First Person Shooters (FPS) are more obvious, though that can't be said the same for all FPS games like Counter-Strike Global Offense and Left 4 Dead 2 (the sound effects in multiplayer mode is quite minimal for some reason, but I guess that can be adjusted in Logitech Gaming Software programme), so FPS games that solely focuses purely on cinematic story mode (like BioShock Infinite and Metro 2033 type of game) have the best immersive sounds from the G633.

Besides that, watching movies with the G633 is fairly good too particularly on action movies. Listening to music is nice too, however I felt like there was something missing if I was to compare it with my Audio Technica ATH-M40x model. It's like, the G633 gives a very “clean” sound, but it lacks “character and style” which the ATH-M40x can do. But oh well, it's a gaming headset nonetheless so not really an issue.

p/s - The headset can also be used on an iMac, just in case you're wondering.

Conclusion - Pretty good and price is reasonable

I think for RM599 (including GST) the G633 is a great gaming headset. You can use it for gaming, movies and music, the built-in microphone is clear, earpads are super comfy and doesn't make your ears gasping for air in long term usage (most favourite!), customizable colour lighting and sounds from the programme. The only thing that I don't really like is how easily it falls off if I tilt my head backwards, otherwise, the headset is just fine by sitting still.

Anyhow, I still had a fun time using it. So this is a shoutout to Logitech for doing a good job for sticking to their reputation as one of the recognized gaming product manufacturers and I hope they get better everyday.
