The first Lytro camera revolutionized digital photography by allowing users to refocus after the shot was taken. The newly announced Lytro Illum takes it a step further by allowing you to do the same refocusing but at much higher definitions while letting you take both long range as well as close-up shots without having to change the lens. Tech specs and features include a 40 Megaray light ray sensor which is much larger than the 11 Megaray sensor in the original Lytro camera along with a much lighter lens.

While a similar DSLR could weigh in at 3.6kg with an equal lens and body, the Lytro Illum delivers the same performance at a mere 680g. In camera terms the Lytro Illum delivers a zoom range of 30 to 250mm with f/2 aperture and 1:3 macro made possible by a simpler lens construction that works with complex algorithms to provide the same performance. A mechanical shutter with the speed of 1/4000th of a second makes it even better for fast moving objects.

Other tech specs and features includes 8x optical zoom, a standard hot shoe, SD card support, a USB 3.0 port, a 4-inch tiltable touch screen and built-in WiFi. The controls are also simplified but still allow you access to ISO, Shutter and Manual controls. Pricing for the Lytro Illum is set at $1599(RM5228) from 15 July 2014 but you can pre-order from the Lytro site at an intro price of $1499 (RM4901) with free training and other freebies. It seems unlikely that there will be any Malaysia release date but we could see some come from third-party sellers.
