In a recent set of benchmark tests, Qualcomm showed off their latest Snapdragon 800 chipset, which will appear in premium smartphones later in 2013. Already, there are rumours of a Snapdragon 800 powered Samsung Galaxy S4 Plus smartphone. The benchmarks carried out by Qualcomm are impressive to say the least. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 800 series will be Quad-core processors called the Krait 400 fabricated a 28nm. Each core will run at 2.3 GHz and the processor will use a new Adreno 330 GPU. The chip will also integrate a 4G LTE modem that can go up to 150 Mbps and support 802.11ac WiFi.

Quadrant 2.1.1 benchmark for the Snapdragon 800

In the Quadrant 2.1.1 benchmark, the processor outperformed practically every other processor in the same class by a huge margin. Not surprisingly, it also ran every game or app smoothly with no lag whatsoever, including "Need for Speed: Most Wanted", "Epic Citadel" and even Epic's Unreal Engine at 59.7 frames per second for 1920 x 1080 resolution. This is probably because there is as of now, still no app or game which can truly make the processor break a sweat, but this may change with time.

What does this mean for the user?

It probably means that if you've been looking to buy a tablet or smartphone in the near future, you should probably wait for the next batch of Snapdragon 800 powered devices to come out. This won't take very long either as many of these devices, both smartphone and tablet, are slated for release later in 2013. You should also wait because the benchmarks shown of the Snapdragon 800 don't show it's energy efficiency. So while it may blow everything else out of the water, it may also end up being an energy guzzler too. The best strategy we'd advise for now is to wait and see.
