After months of speculation the Sony Xperia Z Ultra or ZU finally gets officially announced. Confirming many of the rumours about it, the ZU's main buzz words are largest, slimmest and fastest on top of being water proof and capable of using any pencil, capacitive point or metal pen with 1mm or larger tip as a stylus. The tech specs for the Sony Xperia ZU include:

  • 6.44-inch Triluminos display (1920 x 1080, X-Reality for Mobile, 10 point touch, shatter proof sheet on scratch resistant glass)
  • 2.2GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974)
  • Adreno 330 Graphics
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB storage + microSD (up to 64GB)
  • 8MP rear camera (Exmor RS, 16x digital zoom, auto focus, no flash) + 2MP front camera (1080p recording)
  • Supports LTE + NFC
  • 3000 mAh (14 hours 3G, 530 hours 3G standby, 510 hours LTE standby)
  • IP58 rated
  • Black, Purple, White
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 179 x 92 x 6.5 mm thick | 212g

At 6.44-inches, this is currently the largest phablet around and according to Sony the thinnest Full HD capable device. Almost more of a tablet than a phablet, it is a bit difficult to grip due to the flat glass surface and rather large width. It does look very sleek and classy though and is slimmer than what you would first think, making it look more like a smartphone. While it doesn't combine every Sony technology out there, it does offer a Triluminous display and other Sony display technologies like X-Reality for Mobile.

The lack of an LED flash must mean that Sony are confident enough in the Exmor RS sensor's low light capabilities to not think it necessary. Like the Sony Xperia Z you can also toss it into water or a hotpot and still have it survive. However, since it doesn't have any dedicated camera button, it probably won't record video or images underwater, unless of course Sony adds some firmware where you can use the volume rocker instead. For now, overseas retailers are offering it at EUR679 (RM2835) and above but these are early SIM-free prices, so you can expect some price drops a couple of months later. It should reach Malaysia in Q3 of 2013. You can more detailed information from the Sony site or you can check out all the features in the videos below:
