IPRO Livepad 8.9 review - Full Metal and full HD value-added Windows 8.1 tablet

When you say local Malaysian brand you don't often equate that with quality products, instead you tend to say cheap build and affordable pricing instead. The IPRO Livepad 8.9 tablet keeps that affordable perception but offers a premium full metal frame covered by tempered glass on the front and back in a beautiful flat and thin design. Truth be told, we haven't seen a tablet of this quality in some non-local brands for a while and to top it off it is going for a promotional price of RM699. How can something so cheap be so awesome? And can you replace your laptop with it? We find out all the details in our review of the very much value-added IPRO Livepad 8.9 tablet below.

Acer recently announced a new addition to their Iconia range of tablets with the Acer Iconia Tab 10. The higher-end version has tech specs that include a 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MT8217 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, 5700 mAh battery, 2MP camera and is priced at $250 (RM928). The lower-end version goes for $200 (RM742) but tech specs include a 1.3GHz processor, 1280 x 800 pixel resolution display, 1GB RAM and 16GB storage. Going hands-on with the iPro Livepad 8.9 tablet - Solid metal frame tablet for just RM699!

Intel is looking to really help local Malaysian tech companies into the limelight by providing Intel tech and expertise for mobile devices. This includes local device maker iPro and we were recently able to get some hands-on time with their latest iPro Livepad 8.9 tablet. Powered by a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3735F processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and an 8000 mAh battery this surprisingly powerful tablet also sports  an 8.9-inch full HD (1920 x 1200 pixels) display and Windows 8.1. The Livepad 8.9 was recently on promotion at Plaza Low Yat for just RM699 with a free bluetooth keyboard (complete with trackpad) and casing worth RM199 for 500 early-bird buyers. Unfortunately, all of these keyboard and casing promos have already been snapped up. The RM699 offer is still available for buyers at www.iclickz.com while stocks last (as of the time of writing, they still had stock) but after this the tablet is expected to retail at RM799. We managed to score some hands-on time with the iPro Livepad 8.9 tablet in this article.

  • Below $100 (RM365) Windows 8.1 tablets are trickling in to Malaysia

Below $100 (RM365) Windows 8.1 tablets are trickling in to Malaysia

A while back, Microsoft said that we'd be seeing $100 (RM365) Windows 8 tablets before long and it appears that they are already here. Granted, the more well known HP Stream 7 which was recently offered for $79 (RM288) is only available at the Microsoft US store. However, a quick search at mobile market sites like Lelong.com.my and others reveal Windows 8.1 tablets being sold for as low as RM320. Yes, these are unheard of brands like Pipo and Cube or even Ainol but the tech specs are nothing to sneeze at. These include a 64-bit Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB storage and features like a 1-year free subscription of Office 365. Be warned though, these are devices brought in without any international warranty but those looking for a more affordable computing tablet could give such devices a go. Build quality could also be suspect but you do get what you pay for. Still no chances for a RM100 Windows tablet yet, but there could still be hope for the HP Stream 7 to come to Malaysia eventually. In related news, Intel Malaysia are pushing various Malaysian-based Intel powered tablets at slightly higher pricing and local warranty with the latest being the iPro LivePad 8.9 tablet at RM699.
