1 Utama launches license plate recognition (LPR) parking feature for ONECARD members

1 Utama Shopping Centre has introduced a new parking payment system using License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, available exclusively to ONECARD members.

The feature went live this week and can be activated through the 1 Utama SuperApp.

How it works

To enable the service, users must follow the notification prompt in the app, agree to the terms, and register their vehicle’s plate number and type.

Each ONECARD account can link up to two vehicles. Once activated, the physical ONECARD can no longer be used at parking touch sensors.

Instead, parking fees will be automatically deducted from the customer’s 1Pay account, which can be topped up via the same app.

At present, the LPR system is limited to ONECARD members. However, 1 Utama management has confirmed plans to extend it to non-members in the future.

Located in Bandar Utama, Selangor, 1 Utama is recognised as the 13th largest shopping mall in the world. The mall has faced past criticism for only accepting paper parking cards and ONECARD payments, while many other malls in Malaysia already support debit cards, credit cards, and Touch ‘n Go payments.

What we could expect

The adoption of LPR technology marks a step forward for 1 Utama’s parking system, aligning it with the growing trend of automated, contactless payments in Malaysia.

Still, its current restriction to ONECARD users may limit adoption until wider payment options are introduced. Stay tuned for more news like this at TechNave!
