At this year’s Broadcom MASTERS competition, one of the winners is just a 14 years old girl who invented a prototype to eliminate blind spots in the car. The particpants of the competion were selected from the Society affiliated science & engineering fairs that happened in the states as some of the 6th, 7th and 8th graders were provided an opportunity to show off their creativity at a larger scale event.
Alaina Glasser, who has won USD25000 (RM103,492.50) along with the other 29 contestants, started a project named “Improving Automobile Safety by Removing Blind Spots”. The initiative of the project is to help drivers to eliminate blind spots while driving.
The inspiration for the idea actually came from Alaina’s mother as she found her mother constantly struggling with blind spots while driving. Alaina does not have a driving license as she is too young. However, she is still able to pull off an invention like this that would benefit a lot of the drivers.
The system she invented uses a web camera that is mounted outside of the car to record the surrounding blocked by the car’s windshield pillars. A live feed of the surrounding will then be projected inside of the car’s pillars to make them look like they’re invisible like what is shown in the video below.
We have seen cars like the Lexus ES with the concept of projecting images instead of using the side mirrors. Therefore, it is exciting to see more of these ideas that can help to improve the driving experience among the drivers.
