
2 local teens were swiftly rescued by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JPBM) yesterday (21 June) after getting lost in the forest while hiking at Bukit Cherok Tok Kun in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. This is thanks to WhatsApp, as they were able to contact JBPM and share their exact location via the popular messaging app.

According to BERNAMA, the two 18-year-old teens made an emergency call to the Penang JBPM at around 1.16pm yesterday. Thankfully, there was a telco signal where they got lost.
They were then able to share their exact location with the Penang JBPM via WhatsApp, with the latter promptly sending a team from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to rescue the duo.
Penang JBPM assistant operations director John Sagun Francis revealed that 5 personnel were involved in the search and rescue operation for the teenagers. Furthermore, the operation was also assisted by the public.
He added that the two teens were found and brought down safely, with the operation ending at 4.14pm. Both victims were handed over to their guardians afterwards.
