2016 Sony World Photography Awards is now open

The Sony World Photography Awards is back for the 9th year and it is now open for entries, organised by the World Photography Organisation, the award attracts thousands of talented artists and photographers to present the world’s best contemporary photography from the last 12 months.

For next year’s exciting competition, there will be 14 Professional categories and are divided into 2 distinct genres - Art and Documentary. In addition, both of these genres also include new categories which are Art presenting the new Staged and Candid categories and Documentary now including Daily Life and Environment. Winners of the award will win the latest Sony digital imaging equipment, a Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London, an inclusion in the 2016 awards’ book of the winners’ photograph and $30000 (RM125653) for the overall winners.

Besides that, the World Photography Organisation and its Student Focus competition will be partnering with British Journal of Photography (BJP), the world's longest-running photography magazine. With this joint partnership, the winning Student Focus photographer will have the opportunity to showcase his or her work on the BJP website and a chance to take over the magazine’s Instagram feed.

A note for those who are interested in partaking the event, local countries in the Asia Pacific region such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Philipines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and many more are also holding a National Award where local winners will attend the Sony World Photography Awards Gala Ceremony and the winning image will be exhibited in Somerset House, London. The local photographer’s best picture will run across the world from Argentina to Australia, as an honour and reward by the National Awards program

2016 COMPETITION CATEGORIES:-

  • Professional – for serious photographers, 14 categories in two genres judged on a series of work in Art - Architecture, Conceptual, Landscape, Portraiture, Staged, Still Life, Candid and Documentary - Campaign, Current Affairs, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Environment, People, Sport
  • Open - open to all, 10 categories judged on a single shot in Architecture, Arts and Culture, Enhanced, Low Light, Nature and Wildlife, Panoramic, People, Smile, Split Second, Travel
  • Youth - for young photgraphers aged 12-19, three categories judged on a single image in Culture, Environment, Portraits
  • National Awards - best single shot by a local photographer from over 50 countries
  • Student Focus - for emerging photography talent studying any degree level of photography courses
