3 students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (UTM) made history by being named Malaysia National Runners-Up in the engineering design competition, James Dyson Award 2025. So, what should you know about it?

Could be a revolutionary addition for Malaysia

For your information, the team, consisting of Chow Ming Fong, Magnus Gin Xiang Short and Wong Zhi Ying, developed the Flood Monitoring Alert & SOS System (FMAS), a smart innovation that has the potential to save lives during flood disasters.

Additionally, the FMAS uses LoRa technology to detect water levels in real time, send early warnings to communities, and allow flood victims to send GPS-based emergency signals.

Unlike conventional systems that only deliver one-way alerts, FMAS introduces two-way communication via the waterproof and portable SOS Locator Beacon. This system remains functional even without a telephone network or electricity supply, making it very relevant for high-risk areas.

Moreover, this success not only proves the ability of UTM students in producing high-impact technological solutions but also qualifies them for the global round with finalists from 28 other countries.

Additionally, the FKM lecturer, Ir. Dr Amir Putra Md Saad expressed his pride in this achievement and commitment to continue strengthening the culture of design innovation at UTM.

This innovation provides new hope in efforts to address the impact of floods that are increasingly frequent in Southeast Asia.
