Facebook's parent company, Meta, has reportedly begun laying off thousands of employees after the social media giant took a tougher stance on underperforming employees.

This step was also taken after Meta invested heavily in its own AI development. According to Reuters, Meta is set to begin layoffs on Tuesday in several countries as part of its efforts to accelerate the hiring of machine learning engineers. Based on an internal memo obtained by Business Insider, Meta plans to cut about 4,000 jobs which will affect about 5 percent of its workforce.

Additionally, affected employees include employees in Europe, Asia, and the US who have been notified. Workers in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands will not be included in the layoffs "due to local regulations", while more countries across Europe, Asia and Africa will receive termination notices between February 11-18.
