4GB phones could make a comeback because of AI

With the demands of AI rising in recent years, it is not a surprise that the prices for RAM have increased as well. So, it should not be a surprise if companies decide to limit the RAM for their phones. So, what should you know about it?

This trend could happen as early as 2026

According to Trendforce, this trend could happen due to rising costs and limited supply; Android devices with 4GB of RAM will reappear in the market by 2026. This will have the biggest impact on entry-level devices that currently come with between 6 and 8 GB of RAM.

Moreover, users will have to pay a premium price if they want to own a device with 8GB of RAM. Unfortunately, on affordable devices, the virtual memory feature is not supported as they still use eMMC storage. High demand for AI chips has led Xiaomi and Samsung to confirm that their devices will be priced higher next year.

In addition, Lenovo has made bulk purchases of memory and storage to reduce the price impact until the end of 2026. There are even rumours that next year the microSD slot will also return to smartphones due to a shortage of storage chips.

Additionally, AI, which is said to have a positive impact on productivity, is now causing hardware prices to rise while also contributing to carbon emissions, noise pollution, excessive water consumption and the same energy costs as hundreds of thousands of private homes.
