Samsung has finally revealed the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone and as expected, it is a mix of relatively unchanged design and new features. While many have been hoping for a metal Galaxy S5, this unfortunately did not come true as the overall plastic build and shape are more or less the same. That being said, there are still some small design changes such as the perforated back cover and some new colours like Electric Blue and Copper Gold. Most of the changes in the Samsung Galaxy S5 come in the form of tech specs and features which are listed below:

  • 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB / 32GB storage + microSD (64GB)
  • 5.1-display (FHD, Super AMOLED, 1920 x 1080)
  • 16MP rear camera (UHD@30fps, HDR, video stabilization) + 2.0MP front camera
  • 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1mm | 145g
  • 2800 mAh battery
  • Supports LTE Cat.4, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac HT80, MIMO(2x2), Bluetooth 4.0 BLE / ANT+, USB 3.0, NFC, IR Remote

Unlike previous Galaxy S reveals, this Samsung Unpacked event was rather low-key, however the features above are fairly interesting. In short they mean that the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a bigger Full HD screen (no 2K or 4K resolution), is water proof, has a fingerprint sensor, a 16MP rear camera with OIS-like video stabilizaion and a built-in heart-rate sensor. It offers the latest connectivity options like LTE Cat.4 and Wifi 802.11 ac with dual MIMO antennas. In terms of size and weight, the Galaxy S5 is heavier, thicker and larger than the Galaxy S4, but this is probably due to the water proofing and built-in fingerprint scanner. While the Qualcomm processor, chipset and graphics are the same, they have been overclocked somewhat. Details on Malaysia release dates or pricing are not specific but you should be able to expect it on or after 11 April 2014 at about $600 (RM1969) or more.
