The HUAWEI Mate 50 series launched in Malaysia this week, and we got the Pro variant this time. Like many top-end flagship smartphones, it promises incredible specs and features to match. Of course, the question is always: What makes it stand out?

This time, we got to try the phone ahead of the launch. You can check out our video here for our first impressions. But if you want more details, here are the 5 areas where the HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro impressed us.

#1 Camera performance

This camera has an adjustable physical aperture, how cool is that?

While most smartphones try to cater to everyone, some models answer specific needs. In this case, the HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro is firmly aimed at mobile photographers. Its 50MP main camera has several great features, such as laser autofocus, optical image stabilization, and a 10-size adjustable physical F1.4 aperture.

Besides the hardware, the Mate 50 Pro also comes with HUAWEI's XD Fusion Pro image engine. The XD Fusion Pro can adjust image brightness and light and shadow details, giving you plenty of control over how your photos turn out. Thanks to this, you can take incredibly high-quality pictures even under low-light conditions. If you didn't know already, the Mate 50 Pro even got first place on DXOMark, which is pretty impressive!

#2 Screen quality

Has a great OLED display

Another aspect that really impressed us was the screen. The HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro has a large 6.74-inch screen that uses an OLED panel capable of outputting 1212 x 2616 pixels at a 120Hz refresh rate. Be it movies or mobile games, you'll enjoy crisp, vibrant and smooth visuals on this screen. But that's not all, as the screen is also super tough.

Specifically, the Orange Vegan Leather Version comes with Kunlun glass on the screen. This glass consists of 10 quadrillion-level nanocrystals, making it ultra-resilient against accidental drops. In fact, it allowed the Mate 50 Pro to be the first smartphone to receive a 5-star glass drop resistance certification from Switzerland's SGS certification institute. The device also has IP68 water resistance for up to 6m under water.

#3 Battery longevity

The last 1% of the battery can last long enough with the Low-Battery Emergency Mode

If you look at the specs sheet, a 4700mAh battery doesn't sound like much. But the HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro has an interesting battery feature - the Low-Battery Emergency Mode. This feature allows the Mate 50 Pro to extend 1% of the remaining battery to a standby time of over 2 hours or give you an extra 12 minutes of call time when enabled. This can be handy if you're stuck outside with no way to charge your phone but need to make an emergency call.

#4 UI features

HUAWEI's EMUI 13 user interface offers many cool features like SuperStorage. This feature removes duplicate files and rarely used ones, allowing the system to save up to 20GB of storage space. There's also the SuperHub feature, which lets you temporarily store images or documents, and then share them in batches. It's great because you can easily transfer files between apps and devices. Besides that, EMUI 13 also has built-in security features like virus scanning, privacy detection, and more.

#5 AppGallery

Last but not least, the Mate 50 Pro's OS also has AppGallery. This is HUAWEI's own app store, where you can download many of your favourite apps. It's one of the safest app stores around, as it comes with a security check, fraud detection, and more.

According to HUAWEI, AppGallery currently offers about 99% of all frequently-used apps by Malaysians. HUAWEI has been continuously adding more to its app store, which already has apps like TikTok, Shopee, Lazada, Touch 'n Go eWallet, Grab, and MAE by Maybank2u. To find out what else is available, visit the AppGallery website to make a search query. You could also use selected Google apps on the HUAWEI Mate 50 series.
