In Gartner's latest global labour market report (Q1 2026), it predicts that by 2027, half of the companies that fail to develop a human-centric AI strategy will lose their best AI talent to competitors. So, what should you know about it?

Companies will lose their best AI talent if they do not adopt a human-centric AI strategy

This move was made regardless of whether the technology would actually generate profits for the company. This phenomenon is called the "illusion of effectiveness", which ultimately affects investment returns.

“The survey reveals that in the transition to an AI-powered workforce, most leaders mistakenly consider basic access or adoption metrics as transformational,” said Swagatam Basu, Senior Director of Analysts, in Gartner’s HR practice.

The study found that the companies that recorded the highest ROI were organisations that used AI as a tool to help employees work more efficiently, rather than replacing them entirely. According to Gartner, companies that focus too much on employee reduction risk getting limited returns from AI.

Additionally, this is because the true value of AI lies not in reducing labour but in increasing worker productivity. Furthermore, the benefits of AI are felt more by managers and executives, while key contributors at the individual level still receive less support.

While big tech companies like Microsoft and Meta continue to cut jobs while investing heavily in AI, Gartner believes most of these moves are just early experiments and not permanent structural changes in the world of work.

People-centric strategy over algorithm all day

In conclusion, successful organisations don't just use AI, but ensure that every layer of the workforce is given the opportunity, support, and confidence to grow with technology. Specific training for individual contributors, psychological support, and transparent communication about employees' future roles are critical to building confidence and reducing anxiety.

"The most effective drivers of positive AI adoption are employee confidence in their current and future roles, as well as transparent and ongoing communication about how AI will be used and its impact on jobs." Swagatam Basu.

A people-centric strategy not only retains talent but also paves the way for more sustainable business transformation.
