The Consumer Electronics Show 2020 (CES 2020) is finally underway and we already have interesting news from all over. Those who are into PC building would be particularly keen on what AMD had to reveal, though this time the chipmaker decided to only talk about its latest AMD Ryzen Threadripper, Mobile Ryzen 4000 series, Athlon 3000 series CPUs.

Let's take a look at AMD's latest offerings, starting with the new Ryzen Threadripper 3990X. This new CPU for HEDT (high-end desktop) PCs has a whopping 64-cores and 128 threads, allowing it to perform faster than the Ryzen Threadripper 3970X. For example, it managed to perform 51% faster in 3D Ray Tracing in MAXON Cinema4D Renderer and get a score of 25399 points in single-threaded performance for Cinebench R20.

Next is the new CPUs for the Ryzen 4000 series meant to be used on laptops. These new CPUs are divided into the U-series and H-series, which are rated at 15W and 45W TDP, respectively. AMD expects these CPUs to deliver greater thermal performance, which should allow OEM manufacturers to build laptops with thinner and lighter chassis. They are also expected to come with onboard Vega graphics.

For the U-series, the Ryzen 7 4800U is the biggest hitter, offering up to 4% faster in single-threaded and 90% in multithreaded performance compared to Intel's Core i7-1065G7. There's also the Ryzen 7 4800-H, which can deliver up to 5% more single-threaded and up to 46% multi-threaded performance than the Intel Core i7-9750H.

Last but not least is the AMD Athlon 3000 series CPUs, which also come equipped with a built-in GPU. AMD's mainstream series for this year is expected to deliver up to 86% more GPU performance and up to 51% improvement to productivity applications. It's available in two models of Athlon Gold 3150U (2-cores, 4-threads) and Athlon Silver 3050U (2-cores, 2-threads).

If you need a better performing laptop or a high-end CPU for 3D rendering, then this could be a good year to finally upgrade. What do you think? Share your thoughts on the new CPUs on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more CES 2020 coverage.
