700,000 subscribers left Disney+ last year after the price hike

During Disney's financial report in the first quarter of 2025, it was announced that the company had lost 700,000 Disney+ subscribers around the world before the end of last year. The price hike for the platform last year may have contributed to the result.

Despite losing 700,000 subscribers, there are still millions of subscribers on Disney+. According to the financial report, there are still 124.6 million Disney+ subscribers. Disney noted the drop in subscribers back in August when the price hike happened. In Malaysia, the new price tier list came in March 2024.

On top of that, another factor that contributed to the decline in users is cracking down on password sharing which began last year. Similarly to Netflix's Extra Member feature, Disney launched a Paid Sharing plan in the US, Canada and select parts of Europe. Paid Sharing is not available in Asian countries due to different pricing models.

700,000 is a big number but it didn't hurt Disney+ that much. Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company already anticipated that but it was not as bad as expected. Still, this is the first time that Disney+ lost that many subscribers in the first quarter since its debut. The company expects to see another decline in the second quarter of 2025 as well.

On the other hand, Hulu gained 1.6 million subscribers, reaching a total of 53.6 million subscribers. Hulu is also part of Disney+ in Malaysia so there's no requirement to sign up as one.
