So here's some news from ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG). Nope, it's not about the ROG Phone but we got to check out the Zephyrus S (GX531) as the latest ultrathin gaming laptop, as well as the Strix SCAR II (GL704) featuring a big 17.3-inch display in the Strix series in Taiwan! There's no price or availability announced yet, but we do have some information on the specifications, so read on if you want to know more!
Starting with the Zephyrus S, the latest family member is actually 12% thinner than the original Zephyrus (GX501) which debut last year, measuring at 14.95~15.75mm thin only. Inside the slim military-grade full metal body, it features the latest Intel Core i7-8750H CPU and up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics. The 15.6-inch screen panel has a 144Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time and of course, it has an Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) to minimize the heat from intense gaming. It's also backed-up by a DDR4 2666MHz memory and NVMe storage.
The narrow bezels allow the 15.6-inch display to be squeezed into a 14.2-inch chassis, amazing!
On the connectivity side, the 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi connects easily offers gamers seamless gigabit speeds. On top of that, USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C and a full-size HDMI 2.0 ports are there too allowing users to connect dual auxiliary displays, as well as the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port offering additional bandwidth for compatible devices
Like the previous Zephyrus mode, the keyboard-forward layout allows a more comfortable desktop-like resting position. Gamers can also customise the laptop's integrated RGB lighting to their preference with Aura Sync and 3rd-party apps, it's compatible with gaming peripherals such as the ROG Delta headset and Gladius II Origin mouse
Moving on to the Strix SCAR II (GL704), this gaming laptop also has a 144Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time and a complete sRGB coverage. This 17.3-inch display is equipped with powerful tech-specs such as the 8th Generation Intel processor - up to Core i7-8750H, 6GB of video RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. On the features corner, there's a new ROG RangeBoost technology that helps the user to utilizes additional antennas to extend WiFi connectivity range. Also not to forget, the HyperCool Pro cooling system has three heatsinks and two fans to ensure the laptop doesn't get too hot.
This bad boy has a pretty badass internal memory which is the M.2 NVMe SSD for loading games and apps, and an optional secondary 1TB solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD) for your collection of games
Again, the RGB lighting can be customized with AURA Sync across seven zones: four for the keyboard, two at the light bar across the front edge and the last one on the ROG logo itself on the cover lid. It's compatible with Strix Fusion 700 headset and the Gladius II Origin mouse
Like the Zephyrus S, it also has the latest 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi uses faster frequencies for link speeds up to 1.73Gbps. In addition, it sports four USB Type-A ports, a reversible USB Type-C port, a Mini DisplayPort connection that supports G-SYNC gaming monitors, and an HDMI 2.0 port that can drive 4K UHD monitors and big-screen TVs at 60Hz.
