A landlord in Ipoh was forced to pay an electricity bill of RM1142511.75 after a tenant used their premises to mine crypto illegally. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) attached a demand notice asking for the amount to be paid within 14 days of receipt or face legal action. So, what should you know about it?

A landlord discovered a crypto-mining operation on his commercial premises and immediately reported it to the authorities. However, she was shocked to have to pay excessive bills due to the tenant's operation. In Malaysia, landlords are liable if tenants fail to pay their utility bills.

In addition, TNB said it had lost RM3.4 billion in energy revenue over the five years between 2018-2023. Crypto mining has been popular again since the beginning of this year due to its soaring value. The FTX, Terraform Labs and Binance scandals caused the price of cryptocurrencies to plummet two years ago.
