A leaked memo says Facebook may get a "major redesign" to be more like TikTok

Even if you don't play TikTok, there's no denying that the app has made its mark even more during the pandemic where people learn to create their own content and entertained everyone online. TikTok is arguably one of the most downloaded apps and it seems that Facebook may get a major redesign to compete with them.

While it's not confirmed, the plan to redesign Facebook got leaked from a memo by a Facebook executive, Tom Alison this week. In the memo, it was discussed that there are plans to change Facebook into a "Discovery Engine" which mimics TikTok's "For You" feed. This would make Facebook rely on recommendations and allow users to come across "unconnected" content such as Reels and fewer posts from friends and family.

To complement the Discovery Engine, the memo also mentioned that Messenger would be back in the Facebook app so that users can share content easily. In order to make that work, we imagine that the AI algorithm would need a huge facelift to present recommendations. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already mentioned that the company is in the midst of a "major shift" for that.

There are still a lot of details in the memo but these are the major ones. Alison also stated in the memo that Facebook is trying to reduce its negative experiences as the company has been accused of exploiting divisiveness and promoting misinformation. The company is trying to build up being "Trustworthy", "People-Centric" and "Unified" as a permanent part of its culture, as written in the memo.
