A male teacher suffered a loss of RM258060 after being deceived by a 'phone scam' syndicate. Acting Besut District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Azrol Anuar Nor said the 28-year-old man received a phone call from an individual claiming to be from a goods delivery company in Kuala Lumpur. So, what should you know about it?
When the man in question was at his workplace at about 11.15 am, last June 26, he received a call informing him that there was a package of goods containing illegal identification cards and automated teller machine (ATM) cards sent in the victim's name.
"The line was then connected to a party posing as the police and the victim was informed that his name was also involved in a case of money laundering and the sale of bank accounts.
"However, the victim denied but the scammer asked the victim to make a police report online. "The suspect also told the victim to empty the money in his bank account by transferring the money to a temporary account given to save the victim from having the account frozen," he said in a statement here on Monday.
Azrol Anuar added that the suspect also told the victim that the money would be returned after the investigation was completed. He said, a result of believing that the victim had deposited money in stages 27 times into several different accounts given by the suspect, resulting in a loss of RM258060.
He said, realising that he had been cheated because he still had not received the money that belonged to him, the victim made a police report at 6.32 pm on Sunday. "The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for frauds.
"So the public is advised to be careful with any phone calls and text messages received from unknown parties through any platform so as not to become a victim of fraud," he explained. Azrol Anuar said that the action of tracking and arresting the suspect is now being actively carried out and the police are still collecting evidence for prosecution.
