Have you ever wondered how much it costs for a smartphone manufacturer to produce one unit of the device? Well, a recent teardown of the Apple iPhone 15 series seeks to answer that question, revealing some interesting findings in the process.
Performed by Nikkei Asia, the teardown of the latest iPhone series reveals that the production cost of the top-tier model rose about 10 per cent from its predecessor. That marks a record high for the second consecutive year, though the cost-to-retail price still remains below 50 per cent for all models.
According to the report, one iPhone 15 costs Apple USD423 or ~RM2025 to produce. For reference, the model starts at RM4399 in our country.
Meanwhile, one unit of iPhone 15 Plus costs Apple USD442 or ~RM2116 to make in comparison to its pricing starting at RM4899 in Malaysia. As for the Pro models, one unit of the iPhone 15 Pro costs USD523 or ~RM2503 to manufacture compared to its starting retail price of RM5499 in our country.
The top-ranging model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max costs Apple USD558 or ~RM2671 to produce one unit. In Malaysia, the model starts at RM6499.
Besides that, the report also revealed that the most expensive part of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the screen, which is made by Samsung and costs USD115 or ~RM550 each. This is followed by the in-house A17 Pro SoC (USD130 or ~RM622), the titanium frame from Foxconn (USD50 or ~RM239) and the telephoto camera by LG and Sony (USD30 or ~RM144).
Of course, do take this with a grain of salt as Nikkei Asia only considered the prices of the parts. The price excluded the manufacturing labour, design process, marketing or logistics.
