AI is certainly the trend of 2024 but it could be bad news for many Malaysian workers across the nation. According to a report by Talentcorp, up to 600,000 workers from 10 key industries could lose their jobs to AI.

Minister Steven Sim from the Ministry of Human Resources told the media that as AI continues to improve exponentially in the digital and green technology space, he hopes Talentcorp's report can guide industries and workers in the future and prepare for it. In the report, Talentcorp collaborated with several industries to study the impact and more firms are using AI for automation.

In addition, the report also predicts 60 new job types in the next three to five years. The Ministry of Human Resources will release the report in November this year on a website, showcasing the most impacted jobs, medium impacted jobs and low impacted jobs. People with highly impacted jobs can also transition into new roles easily.

This won't be a one-time report, said Sim, as his ministry will continue the study with other sectors in the next few years. By the way, the 10 key industries include:

  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Global business services
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Food manufacturing and services
  • Electrics and Electronics
  • Aerospace
  • Wholesale and Retail trade
  • Medical devices
  • Chemicals
  • Energy and Power

Sim hopes the website can help workers prepare for the worst and transition into new jobs seamlessly when the time comes. Until then, stay tuned for the official report releasing in November 2024.
