If you surf the Malaysia thread on Reddit a lot, you might remember coming across a topic about food delivery platforms using AI-generated food images. Yesterday, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) said that food businesses must be transparent if the images are AI-generated.

In KPDN's statement, food businesses must follow the Guidelines for Avoiding False or Misleading Advertisements. Like any other advertisement, it must contain accurate and truthful information so that consumers can make informed purchasing decisions without confusion, as stated in the guideline.

On Reddit, there are already two topics about it recently. With that, the usage of AI-generated food images is still minimal. KPDN said that it has not received many complaints about this on food delivery platforms. Nonetheless, food delivery services and food businesses must still adhere to the guidelines, which can be referred to here.

If you happen to come across any AI-generated food images, you can also file an official complaint to KPDN. There are four ways to do it:

  • WhatsApp at 019 848 8000
  • The e-aduan portal
  • Official call centre - 1800 886 800
  • File a complaint in the ezADU KPDN mobile app

The KPDN would like to remind all advertisers that those who publish false or misleading advertisements can be prosecuted. Under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 or the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, an individual can face fines of up to RM100,000 or three years in jail, or up to RM250,000 for companies that do the same.
