Sony's next console PlayStation 6 (PS6) will reportedly use chips released by AMD. According to IGN SEA, AMD beat out bids by Intel and Broadcom for the same contract. One of the reasons AMD was chosen was to ensure that the PS5 could run the PS4 and PS5 game catalogue. So, what should you know about it?
For your information, Continuing support for old games is necessary because Sony wants to avoid repeating the mistake of the PS3 which used an NVIDIA-based Cell chip which caused this console's games to not be playable on subsequent consoles. The contract is believed to be awarded to AMD in 2022.
Moreover, even if AMD wins this bid, the PS6 is only expected to be released four years from now because it takes about 8 years for each console generation. The PS5 Pro, announced two weeks ago, will go on sale starting next November. It is believed that the failure to win the Sony contract is one of the factors why Intel suffered losses, resulting in the need to reduce thousands of workers and is now separating its subsidiary business from the parent company.
