AMD predicts that DDR5 memory prices will take around two years to return to normal levels. So, what should you know about it?

In an exclusive interview with 4Gamers during Computex 2026, David McAfee, AMD's Vice President & General Manager of Global Client Channel & Graphics Business Group, said that extremely high AI demand has caused a shortage of DDR5 supplies and driven prices up sharply.

The market still needs a lot of time to stabilise itself

For your information, he stated that major manufacturers such as Samsung (Korea), Micron (America) and CXMT (China) are actively expanding DDR5 production capacity. Even so, the market still needs quite a long time to reach a balance between supply and demand.

Moreover, McAfee discussed AMD's platform strategy. He acknowledged that the decision to extend or change the AM5 socket was very challenging due to the high upfront costs. AMD needs to carefully evaluate whether the existing socket can support future technologies like DDR6 and PCIe 6.0, as well as provide real benefits to end users.

For example, upgrading from PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 5.0 on an SSD does not provide a significant user experience improvement for most people. Personally, we feel the price drop is welcome news. Especially for everyone in Malaysia. However, not everyone has the luxury of time to do so. If your circumstances call for it, then you might need to get it as soon as possible. What are your thoughts on the news? Do you think you can wait for the price drop? Feel free to leave your comments below.
