In a gathering at the 10th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting Working Group on Information, Media and Training, Malaysia called for ASEAN nations to instil values of cooperation, understanding and respect among youth as the region accelerates toward a more digital future.
The importance of shared values to maintain regional harmony
For your information, Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa stressed that these shared values can help sustain regional unity amid growing connectivity. He said that as traditions are passed between generations, these principles should also guide young people as they navigate the digital age.
Also present at the dinner event were officials from the Ministry of Communications, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bernama. The two-day meeting aims to strengthen cooperation on information sharing, responsible media use and protecting citizens from harmful content.
Why this matters for tech in Malaysia
Although the focus was on values, the meeting highlights Malaysia’s growing awareness that social cohesion and digital transformation must progress together.
As ASEAN nations continue to adopt new technologies, the risks of misinformation, polarisation and digital divide increase. By embedding cooperative values early, Malaysia is better prepared to manage digital governance, media integrity and regional tech collaboration.
This initiative supports Malaysia’s broader goal of becoming a digital hub where policy, culture and technology work together to build a stronger and more inclusive ecosystem.
