Initially posted as an April Fool joke, the ROG Ally turned out to be the real deal as ASUS officially announced the product just late last night. Here's what we know about the gaming handheld console that could rival the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch.

While the original April Fools announcement about the ROG Ally didn't have much information, YouTuber Dave2D gave us a breakdown of some of the specs. According to the information provided by ASUS, the ROG Ally in the video is an early build model but claimed to have "twice the performance" of the Steam Deck with a brand new AMD Zen 4 chipset.

Moreover, the display is also bigger with 7 inches in a 16:9 aspect ratio, supporting 1920 x 1080 pixels, 500 nits of brightness, up to 120Hz refresh rate and 5ms. The controller is more similar to the Xbox without any mini mouse pad trackers like the Steam Deck, but it has two more extra buttons on the rear. Even the sticks have RGB lighting.

In terms of software support, the ROG Ally runs on Windows 11 and has ROG Armoury Crate just like the ROG gaming laptops. This means you can run Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net and other gaming client platforms. It has some useful ports too with the likes of a 3.5mm audio jack, microSD slot, volume rocker, fingerprint sensor, and a port that connects to the XG Mobile that supports up to RTX 4090 GPU.

Of course, ASUS didn't say how much would the ROG Ally cost but it could be "competitively priced" to the Steam Deck. For reference, the Steam Deck starting price is $399 (~RM1758) but Dave2D thinks it could cost higher since it has better hardware. The pre-order page also listed Canada and the US as the first-wave markets as well.
