AT&T thinks Crunchyroll is worth ~RM6.3 billion, wants to sell it to Sony

Any anime fans here? If you are one, you've probably heard of Crunchyroll, even if you don't use the platform. The platform is currently owned by AT&T, but that might change soon. Sources claim that the American company is looking to sell Crunchyroll in a massive deal.

According to Gizmodo (via The Information), AT&T could be trying to persuade Sony to buy Crunchyroll. The company's evaluation of the platform is USD 1.5 billion (~RM6.3 billion), which is probably a lot more than what most people would have expected. Allegedly, AT&T is doing this to help ease debts that amount to a whopping USD 151 billion (~RM632.3 billion).

HBO Max currently has some content from Crunchyroll and will be affected by a sale

The sale of Crunchyroll could have a slight effect on HBO Max as well, another AT&T streaming platform that has some content from Crunchyroll. But HBO Max will still have some anime content through its other platforms and it's not like anime fans are the main audience, so this probably isn't a big deal.

Crunchyroll being sold to a Japanese company could be boon, with Sony particularly experienced in this thanks to its Aniplex business. Of course, it may not mean anything to the average anime fan.
