Are you a TikTok enjoyer? Do you visit Instagram just to watch Reels? If that's you, here is news that may interest you. Although nothing has been confirmed, there's a possibility that Instagram Reels could become a separate app.
According to The Information (via Reuters), Instagram boss Adam Mosseri has told staff he's considering launching Instagram's Reels feature as an independent app. As you may know, Reels is the short-form video feature on Instagram. The move could be a welcome change and improve user experience, especially for users who only visit Instagram for Reels.
Such a move could also allow Instagram to better grab hold of the short-video market share in the US, which has been disrupted by TikTok's issues in the country. Instagram's parent company Meta has yet to comment on this, but it wouldn't be surprising if that's the company's intention. After all, Meta has previously released apps to acquire the market share of other social media platforms.
For instance, the company launched Edits, a video-editing app, to compete with ByteDance's CapCut earlier this year. There's also the video-sharing app Lasso, which was launched in 2018 to contest TikTok's dominance. By the way, Lasso was shut down in 2020, with its development team likely folded into Instagram to create Reels.
