Google will roll out AI-powered ads in its Search “AI Overviews” in Malaysia by the end of 2025. These sponsored results will appear automatically in AI-generated search summaries during high-intent queries, without additional setup or charges for advertisers.
What’s happening
AI Overviews, also known as the Search Generative Experience, are Google’s attempt to enhance search results by providing concise, AI-generated summaries in response to user queries.
Since May 2024, these summaries have included ads in the United States, appearing under a clear "Sponsored" label when users search for topics that suggest buying intent—such as product recommendations or service comparisons.
Google recently confirmed that this feature is expanding to Southeast Asia. Countries including Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia will start seeing these ads in English-language AI Overviews on both desktop and mobile platforms later this year.
Why now?
This move marks a shift in how users will experience Google Search. Instead of only traditional ads and organic results, users will begin to see sponsored content embedded directly within AI-generated summaries.
According to Google, this allows advertisers to reach people at more decisive moments, especially during searches where a purchase or action is likely to follow.
From a local perspective, this means Malaysian advertisers already running Search, Shopping, or Performance Max campaigns will have their ads featured in AI Overviews without needing to modify their setup.
The system will automatically detect eligible content based on the query.
On the user side, this integration could be helpful when seeking fast answers with buying intent—like finding the best stain remover or a nearby tech repair service. However, this also raises questions about visibility for non-sponsored content and the broader impact on organic search results.
Why it matters
- For users: Ads will appear directly in AI Overviews when the system identifies commercial intent, delivering quick product or service suggestions.
- For advertisers: No extra action is needed. Ads from current campaigns will be automatically included if they match relevant queries.
- For SEO and publishers: The presence of AI-generated answers and embedded ads may shift attention away from traditional web results, possibly affecting traffic and click-through rates.
