Following Nissan’s proposed merger with Honda collapsing, a high-level Japanese group is now drawing up plans for Tesla to invest in Nissan. The group includes former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, his former aide Hiroto Izumi, and former Tesla board member Hiromichi Mizuno.

According to Reuters, the group plans for Tesla to become Nissan’s strategic investor. This is because the group believes that Tesla is keen to acquire Nissan’s plants in the United States.

Following this revelation, Nissan shares closed up 9.6%, though there are many doubts about whether the collaboration would occur. Analysts are doubtful that Tesla would be interested in acquiring Nissan’s plants in the United States, as Tesla already has ample capacity at existing factories and there was a decline in yearly deliveries in 2024.
