Today, it's now AirAsia's turn to announce a new policy for passengers carrying power banks. Just like Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines, the usage of power banks onboard all flights will also be banned, effective from 1 April 2025 onwards.

While using and charging power banks are prohibited, passengers can still carry their power bank devices into the plane, but with new rules. In compliance with AirAsia's new policy, passengers can only carry power banks that do not exceed 100Wh or 20,000mAh. If the power banks are between 100Wh and 160Wh, the passengers will need airline approval at the check-in counter.

On top of that, passengers must follow these rules while on board and throughout the flight. This includes:

  • Power banks must be stored in the seat pocket or under the seat.
  • Power banks are prohibited in the overhead compartment.
  • Power banks are prohibited from being used throughout the flight.
  • Power banks are prohibited from charging other portable electronic devices throughout the flight.
  • Power banks are prohibited in checked-in baggage and must be carried in the cabin.

Previously, Malaysia Airlines made the same announcement back on 19 March, while Singapore Airlines took the first step on 12 March 2025. The new policy complies with the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations regarding the carriage of power banks, which are classified as lithium batteries.
