All iPhone 13 models and more Android smartphones could feature LiDAR sensor

When it comes to depth sensors used by mobile device's, the LiDAR sensor used by Apple is probably considered the best. It's not all iPhones that get it though, with only the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max from last year with it. However, it seems all the iPhone 13 models may have it.

According to 9to5Mac, a report from Digitimes claims that Apple is expected to equip all of its 2021 iPhone models with a LiDAR sensor, which would include all iPhone 13 models. Moreover, Sony has signed a new three-year deal with Apple to continue supplying LiDAR sensors. In other words, Apple may equip all its iPhones with a LiDAR sensor till 2023.

Interestingly enough, the rumour's headline also mentioned that more Android smartphones are expected to use the same type of sensors. Specifically, companies like Samsung are likely to start adopting these direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensors, with new Android devices featuring one to launch as early as the first half of 2022. Looks like these companies want to adopt more advance sensors instead of using the current ones.

If this rumour is true, it would mean more brands want to make 3D ToF a major feature. But honestly, is it a feature you find useful? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
