Amazon Web Services set to make major investment into Malaysia this year

The Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali today revealed that the federal government has given approval to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to invest into Malaysia. The company is expected to make major investment to develop data centres within our country this year. 

AWS, a pioneering giant in the provision of cloud computing services is said to be interested in realising Malaysia’s potential as being a data hub in Southeast Asia. Azmin revealed that currently, AWS has some things to iron out first with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and Ministry of Finance (MOF) before proceeding.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, the MITI Minister also asserted that the federal government will be studying the requests made by AWS in order to encourage quality investments into Malaysia. These include several new incentives which are more innovate and attractive to AWS so that it would build more data centres in our country.

Azmin also stressed that AWS' investment is very important in order to accelerate the digital technology transformation process in Malaysia. AWS are also prepared to provide input to the government in its efforts to enhance the country's competitiveness in the digital economy.
