Amazon Web Services to invest RM25.5 billion and launch Infrastructure Region in Malaysia

Amazon Web Services (AWS) yesterday announced that it is planning to launch an AWS Infrastructure Region in Malaysia. Furthermore, AWS, which is an Amazon.com Inc. company also announced that it will invest USD6 billion or approximately ~RM25.5 billion in Malaysia by 2037, the largest international technology investment to date in our country.  

In a press release, AWS elaborated that the AWS Region will give developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises, as well as government, education, and nonprofit organisations, greater choice for running their applications and serving end users from data centres located in Malaysia. Moreover, the new AWS Region will consist of three Availability Zones at launch, adding to the existing 99 Availability Zones across 31 geographic regions globally.

Among the most notable customers that are using AWS in our country include:

  • Astro Malaysia Berhad
  • Axiata Group
  • Bank Islam Malaysia
  • CelcomDigi
  • Johor Corporation
  • PayNet
  • Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS)

Meanwhile, Malaysian public sector customers use AWS to help drive cost savings and better serve local citizens. These include:

  • Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation
  • BeEducation
  • Cybersecurity Malaysia
  • Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM)
  • Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE)
  • Pos Malaysia
  • Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)

Besides that, Malaysian startups and small businesses such as Baba Products, Carsome, Omesti Berhad and StoreHub are also building their businesses on AWS to rapidly scale nationally and around the world. 

The commitment by AWS was lauded by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who said that it will advance the Malaysia Madani vision of a highly skilled, innovative, prosperous, and sustainable economy. He further added that the investment will bring access to world-class AWS infrastructure, advanced technologies and cloud skills programs to Malaysia will unlock opportunities for local businesses of all sizes to build and expand globally, cultivate a highly skilled workforce, spur new job creation and deliver long-term economic growth.
