Android 11 will introduce 5G E signal label in the future

Starting at the end of 2019, there was already some news about Android 11 here and there but it went silent ever since the pandemic period started taking effect. Now it has resurfaced back again with some news about changing the signal iconography between the 4G and 5G network, as well as introducing a new "5G E" signal label. What is 5G E and how is that different? Allow us to explain.

According to the source, the 5G E is not really 5G but rather an LTE Advanced Pro. To put it in comparison, 5G E is positioned in between LTE+ (4G with carrier aggregation) and 5G (NR, sub-6GHz) so in other words, this 5G E is sort of like a better 4G but not particularly counted as 5G (it's confusing, we know). On the other hand, there's also LTE which is just plain 4G whereas the 5G+ as the highest delivering gigabits speed.

Interestingly, an American telco, AT&T tried to change the LTE Advanced network to 5G E back in 2018 and it showed up on iPhones. It was eventually reverted back due to a lawsuit. Honestly, I don't think there's any point in giving us an extra signal label but oh well, we shall see how it turns out in Malaysia when 5G becomes mainstream.
