The Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Tan Sri Annuar Musa has confirmed that the government is aware of the cybersecurity breach affecting online payment provider iPay88. Moreover, he revealed that the government has begun investigating the matter.

One of the largest online payment platforms in Malaysia, iPay88 issued a statement recently saying that it has suffered a cybersecurity incident in which card data may have been compromised. The company further revealed that upon discovery of the breach, it initiated an investigation on 31 May 2022 and brought in cybersecurity experts to contain the issue.

While the containment process was successful and no further breach was found since 20 July 2022, many are understandably worried of the potential leak of their personal data, especially banking card details. Annuar’s statement thus confirmed that the e-commerce platform are working closely with the authorities and other relevant parties over the security breach.

The Communications Minister elaborated that the government’s personal data protection department (JPJD) has initiated a probe on the matter. As reported by FMT, two banking associations have since assured cardholders that their data is secure despite iPay88’s cybersecurity breach.

This is the latest of many unwanted incidents regarding cybersecurity in Malaysia. Recently, even the Prime Minister was affected by a cybersecurity issue when his Telegram and Signal accounts were hacked.
