Apple Stores step up to solve the iPhone 17 devices scratches

Ever since the iPhone 17 lineup hit the shelves, a fresh concern has bubbled up in Apple Stores: scratches and marks on display units. Shoppers and staff alike flagged blemishes on the rear glass and around the camera bump — and Apple has now begun a multipronged response.

What’s Causing the Marks?

Apple’s internal review points toward a surprising culprit: worn MagSafe stands. Over time, the metal ring edges of these stands can chip or scuff, and when devices are placed or lifted, the contact can lead to “material transfer” onto the iPhone surfaces.

The company emphasised that these aren’t permanent scratches, but rather deposits from the stand that—if treated—can be cleaned off. Notably, it’s not just the new iPhone 17 units that are impacted — earlier display models (like the iPhone 16) have shown similar signs when positioned on the same stands.

Apple’s Fixes: Silicone Sleeves + Salt-Infused Cleaning

To prevent future marks, Apple Stores have begun retrofitting their existing MagSafe stands with silicone rings around the edges. These soft sleeves effectively buffer the metal rim, reducing direct contact with device surfaces.

But what about the phones already bearing marks? According to reporting in Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, Apple has directed its corporate staff to clean demo units more frequently using a salt-based solution mixed into their regular cleaner. One user even tried a home version—water plus sea salt—and reported success in lifting some of the visible marks (though results may vary).

So What's Next?

Visible blemishes on brand-new phones can influence customer perception at first glance. By tackling this issue proactively, Apple aims to preserve the clean, pristine experience it promises in its retail environments.

What’s not fully disclosed yet is the exact salt-cleaning mixture or the long-term durability of the silicone shields. But as Apple rolls this out across more stores, keep an eye on future coverage units (and let me know if you spot any in your local Apple retail).
