According to this new report, Apple might take a different direction with its next smartwatch. It's said that the Apple Watch Series 8 might have a waterproof system that makes it capable of going head to head against brands like Casio G-Shock and Garmin.

Earlier, the tech giant had filed a patent that showcases a new waterproofing tech. It uses a 'smart water detector' with a thin membrane to detect if water has entered the device. The system would be more accurate than Apple's current water resistance technology, allowing the device safely shut down or run water-ejection programs automatically.

After announcing the watchOS9, everything seems clearer now on where the next Apple Watch is heading. The watchOS9 supports new multisport option that allows triathletes seamlessly switch between swimming, cycling and running modes. There's also a SWOLF score for swimmers, which tracks a stroke count combined with the time, in seconds, it takes to swim one length of a standard pool. Therefore, no doubt that the new Apple Watch needs a better waterproof system to achieve these.

Besides that, the source also talks about the possibility of us seeing a rugged Apple Watch. Products from Casio G-Shock and Garmin are made of durable materials that can withstand extreme activities. Meanwhile, Apple Watches are more towards the stylish segment. With that said, the company might equip something that is stronger with the waterproof system rather than the standard variants.
