Apple adds new feature to macOS to make your MacBook's battery live longer

For laptops, you always want them to last as long as possible. We think of all sorts of ways to do this, from reducing the power output to tweaking the software settings. But sometimes the best way is for the manufacturer to optimise the product. And Apple has done just that for its MacBook laptops, with the announcement of a new feature to the macOS.

In the new update announcement, Apple introduced version 10.15.5 for the macOS Catalina, which introduces the new battery health management. According to the description, the feature will improve your battery's lifespan by "reducing the rate at which it chemically ages". It will first monitor your battery's temperature and charging patterns, then optimise the maximum charge accordingly.

Optimising the maximum charge should - theoretically - slow down the chemical ageing process for the lithium-ion in your battery. However, if it reduces your battery's maximum charge instead, your MacBook could have less battery runtime on a single charge. If your MacBook is new and you'd rather it lasts longer on a full charge, it might be better to turn the feature off.
