Apple and Google reveal mobility trend of Malaysia during MCO

As you are all aware, the movement restriction order (MCO) has caused many things to change. The restriction meant that unless it's for purchasing essentials, most of us are going out at all. This is evident with the mobility trend reports published by Apple and Google recently.

Apple's mobility trend report is a simple site that lets you check the foot and car traffic of major cities and 63 countries around the globe. As of 13 April 2020, there has been a 51% decrease in driving and a 61% reduction in foot traffic. If you look at the chart, that's not even the lowest as it dipped below that at some point between March and April 2020. The increase towards the end can be attributed to the fact that some sectors have been allowed to operate again.

Google's report is a bit more nuanced, with it describing the change in mobility for six different sectors. You can see a spike in mobility from the 'grocery & pharmacy' category with this report around 15 March 2020. This coincided with the rush of panic buying in Malaysia, as people scrambled to buy the essentials before MCO was put into effect.

We don't need to see these reports to know that car and foot traffic will go down, but it's still interesting to know the exact numbers. It shows that despite the minority of troublemakers, most people are obeying the instructions to stay at home. For more interesting news like this, stay tuned to TechNave.com.
