When it comes to navigation maps in Malaysia, people would either go for Waze or Google Maps, but never Apple Maps. Apple Maps has been around for a few years already but is often not reliable when compared to Waze and Google Maps.

To improve Apple Maps in Malaysia, Apple has announced that it is conducting ground surveys with vehicles to collect data and support the Look Around feature. The company will also revisit and re-collect data in some locations and conduct surveys with portable systems in certain streets in Kuala Lumpur that aren't accessible.

Apple mentions that some pedestrian surveys will use iPads, iPhones or other devices to collect data to improve Apple Maps. In addition, some pedestrian surveys will also use a backpack system to directly update the data there. All faces and license plates on images that will be published in Look Around are to be censored as well for privacy purposes.

From 18 October 2024 to 31 December 2024, pedestrian backpackers will begin conducting surveys in Selangor, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Johor and Pulau Pinang. If you have comments or questions about this process, your privacy rights, or would like to request that a face, license plate, or your own house be censored, please Apple Malaysia here.
