Apple started using its in-house chip for the Macs in 2020 with the M1 in the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and 24-inch iMac. After that, it continued to make enhanced versions of the chip, M1 Pro and M1 Max, for the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, then in 2022 we get the M1 Ultra in the new Mac Studio. A new report has arrived saying that M2 might not stop at Ultra, as the company could introduce an even more powerful variant.

The M2 Pro and M2 Max could see the light perhaps as early as later this month. After that, 9to5Mac mentions that there might be an M2 Extreme chip. Based on M1's upgrades with each version, the source has also predicted the pattern of the upgrades for the M2, as shown below:

  • M2: 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, up to 24GB RAM
  • M2 Pro (predicted): up to 10-core CPU, up to 20-core GPU, up to 48GB RAM
  • M2 Max (predicted): up to 10-core CPU, 40-core GPU, up to 96GB RAM
  • M2 Ultra (predicted): 24-core CPU, 80-core GPU, up to 192GB RAM
  • M2 Extreme (predicted): 48-core CPU, 160-core GPU cores, up to 384GB RAM

Previously, Bloomberg suggested a slightly more modest 40-core chip was in preparation for the upcoming Mac Pro. However, this new source is pointing towards a 48-core CPU instead. 40-core or 48-core, the M2 Extreme should be powering the Mac Pro. If nothing goes wrong, the machine will get presented next year.
