Although it's not confirmed yet, MacRumors reports that Apple could be changing the iOS 19 name to iOS 26. Why 26? Well, this is so that it aligns the operating system naming with the upcoming year. It is expected to be announced at WWDC on 9 June 2025, aiming to unify the versions across other platforms.
Transitioning to a year-based naming system allows Apple to streamline its software ecosystem and also eliminate the confusion caused by different version numbers. As you should know, the alleged upcoming software updates are logically called iOS 19, macOS 16 and watchOS 12. So if it changes the number to 26, it will be clearer. This includes the likes of iPadOS, macOS, watchOS,tvOS and visionOS.
According to past rumoured news, iOS 19 26 is expected to introduce a comprehensive design overhaul, drawing inspiration from visionOS from the Vision Pro. Users can anticipate a modernised interface featuring redesigned icons, dynamic elements, floating navigation bars, and enhanced haptic interactions. Core applications like the Camera and Messages are also slated for significant updates to provide a more spacious and sophisticated user experience.
If we follow Apple's annual timetable, iOS 26 is very likely to launch alongside the upcoming iPhone 17 series in September 2025. This timing ensures that the new operating system will be the primary version used throughout 2026, aligning with Apple's new naming convention. Well, let's stay tuned until Apple officially unveils the name.
