Apple might be preparing a new operating system for its rumoured virtual or augmented reality(VR/ AR) headset. Developers have spotted the name 'realityOS' roaming around some pre-release iOS 13 builds, GitHub repositories and App Store upload logs. No matter if it's for the company's upcoming VR/ AR headset, there must be something going on.

Back in 2017, Bloomberg first found it referenced as 'rOS'. The source also noted that it could be based on iOS. The new references to realityOS spotted by developers increase the possibility of the company working on it. Fellow developer Steve Troughton-Smith says that a GitHub repository referencing realityOS confirms it "has its own OS and binaries... and has a realityOS simulator." If you don't know about GitHub, it's actually a code hosting platform for version control and collaboration.

Not long ago, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the AR headset could arrive by the end of this year with "the same level of computing power" as an M1 Mac. The analyst also suggests that the headset will be a standalone device. Therefore, it's not surprising for it to have a dedicated operating system. However, don't expect the headset to arrive anytime soon as the company is reportedly facing challenges with overheating, cameras, and software.
