Apple may have scrapped plans to use a more scratch-resistant anti-reflective display coating on the iPhone 17 Pro, according to a MacRumors report citing sources close to the matter. So, what should you know about it?
For reference, in March last year, leaker Instant Digital revealed that Apple was developing a new display layer that was not only anti-reflective but also more scratch-resistant than Ceramic Shield. Since then, there has been no further development on it, and it is now believed that it may not be continued due to its failure.
According to the report, Apple is having trouble ramping up production for the new display coating process. The process for applying the coating is said to be too slow, considering the millions of units of devices Apple produces. Currently, existing iPhones only come with an oleophobic coating that helps reduce fingerprint smudges. For the Mac and iPad Pro, Apple offers a nano-texture display that reduces glare, but that technology has not been extended to the iPhone.
In comparison, Samsung has introduced Gorilla Glass Armour display panel on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which reduces light reflection by up to 75% and is 4x more scratch resistant. This technology helps improve contrast in bright lighting conditions and makes colours appear more vivid and natural under sunlight or bright lights.
If the iPhone 17 model doesn't come with anti-reflective technology as planned, Apple may introduce it in future iPhone models when the production process is smoother and ready.
