Over the past two quarters, smartphone production took a hit. All major players in the industry were affected by this trend. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple even said the demands for Apple could be lower this year. However, a source predicted Apple to become the biggest smartphone manufacturer in 2023.
According to Counterpoint, this could happen if Apple could prevent or avoid the production issues that happened last year. Interestingly, smartphone sales have declined by 6% this year. This is the lowest recorded sales for smartphones in a decade. Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director for North America said:
“There’s been a decoupling between what’s happening in the economy and consumers buying phones. So far this year it’s been record-low upgrades across all carriers.”
Moreover, the Asian (India and China excluded) and North American markets are the main factors that lead to lower sales. The pandemic might be over, but sales are relatively slow because the global economy is recovering. The report also predicts that 1.15 billion smartphones could be produced in 2023. This is lower compared to the 1.32 billion smartphones produced in 2014.
