From the Apple Event, the iPhone Air is one of the most exciting products. However, Apple may be formally exiting the era of physical SIM cards with the global release of the iPhone Air, marking a major shift as the device will be offered exclusively with eSIM—no SIM tray included. So what does this mean for Malaysia?
A New Standard: eSIM Everywhere
Starting with the iPhone 17 series, Apple will push eSIM-only models beyond its U.S. borders. Retail staff across the EU have already undergone specialised training in preparation for this rollout. While the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max may still offer physical SIMs in some markets (such as China), the Air model makes the leap globally.
Why the Switch?
Apple has touted several advantages of eSIM technology—enhanced security, streamlined device activation, and efficient space management. By eliminating a physical SIM slot, Apple not only achieves a cleaner, thinner form factor (especially in the ultra-slim iPhone Air) but also frees up internal space—potentially for battery or other components.
A Milestone in Design and Convenience?
The shift reflects Apple’s commitment to a portless, minimalist future for iPhones. It follows a growing trend among competitors like Google’s eSIM-only Pixel 10. While this move simplifies global device activation and enhances water resistance, it may pose challenges in regions where eSIM infrastructure or adoption remains limited—particularly in markets like China.
eSIM already exists in Malaysia, although not many are adopting the technology yet. Interested customers can simply visit any local telco store to request an eSIM card, which includes CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile and Yes 5G.
